During the 1900\u2019s the coast had few lighthouses and limited marine charts, thus navigation was difficult and any transportation of goods and services was curtailed by conditions, especially in the winter. Norway\u2019s national steamship advisor called for a change, and Captain Richard accepted the challenge. He and his crew methodically documented their travels along the coast and used this wealth of information to provide access and communications to many otherwise isolated Norwegian communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, thousands of visitors sail with Hurtigruten to explore&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bainbridgetravel.com\/bainbridgetravel\/hurtigruten-norwegian-coastal-voyage\/\">Norway\u2019s coastline<\/a>. A 12-day, 7-day or 6-day voyage offers up to 34 ports of call! The itineraries cruise either northbound or southbound and the port calls vary from 45 minutes up to 6 hours. The 12-day roundtrip Bergen voyage covers 1,250 miles of the coastline of Norway, complete with fjords, mountains, and charming fishing villages. This particular cruise crosses the Arctic Circle and you will experience the midnight sun in the summer.
